The gay, lesbian, and transgender people who rebelled against police harassment of a New York gay bar probably had no idea that almost 30 years later the event would be celebrated around the world. Cities from Bogotá, Colombia to Brisbane, Australia hold Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride celebrations in late June to commemo rate the riots that began at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969.
The International Association of Lesbian-Gay Pride Coordinators, located in San Francisco, listed 175 Pride events worldwide as of May 4. Most of these—115—are in the United States.
Not all are in June. Some are in the fall, to avoid conflict with June Pride events in other cities, or, as one organizer said, to make it easier to book performers.”
The international Pride theme for 1998 is "Unity Through Diversity," set by the association's members, who are Fride organizers in individual cities. The IALGPC holds its annual world conference in Los Angeles this year, on October 15 to 18.
Below is a list of Lesbian-Gay Pride events throughout the year. ("Winter" dates— summer in the Southern Hemisphere are in 1998) The JALGPC updates their list weekly, and puts it on a Web site at http://www.interpride.org.
